What metal does that shingle can't
Metal isn't the right roof for every house or every budget, and an honest metal roofing contractor will tell you so. On the Wasatch Front, though, it has real advantages worth knowing about.

Snow slides off
A steel roof sheds Wasatch snow instead of carrying it, so there's less weight on the rafters and less ice damming at the eaves. We add snow guards over doors, walks and driveways so it comes down where you want it to.

Built for canyon wind
Davis County's east winds peel shingles tab by tab. Interlocked metal panels have no tabs to lift and no loose edges to catch, so a windstorm that strips a shingle roof leaves a metal one where it was.

Decades beyond shingle
Installed right, a steel roof outlasts any asphalt product by decades. For a lot of homeowners it's the last roof they'll ever buy.

Altitude sun doesn't age it
At 4,300 feet the sun dries asphalt until it curls and cracks. Steel doesn't care. The finish mellows over the years while the panel underneath stays sound.

It doesn't burn
Steel is noncombustible, which counts for homes that back onto dry foothills, and some insurers take it into account.

A cooler attic in July
Metal reflects the sun that dark asphalt soaks up, so the attic runs cooler and the air conditioner works less in a Wasatch Front summer.
The honest counterweight: metal costs well more than shingle up front, and big hail can dent it. More on both below, because you should hear it from us.
Standing seam or Tuff Rib?
A standing seam roof is the premium system. The panels lock together and the fasteners hide under the seams, so nothing goes through the surface and nothing is left out in the weather. It's the cleanest look and the longest life, at the higher price.
Tuff Rib roofing is the classic ribbed steel panel, screwed through the face with sealing-washer screws. It gives you most of metal's advantages for less. The trade: those screws sit in the sun and want a checkup every few years.
- Standing seam: concealed fasteners, 24- and 26-gauge steel
- Tuff Rib: metal at a working price, 29- and 26-gauge panels
- Both in a wide range of colors
- A plain answer on which one fits your house
Each has its own page: standing seam metal roofing and Tuff Rib metal roofing.
How a metal roof installation works
A metal roof is a precision job: panels cut to your roof and trim bent to its edges. Most homes take one to three days, and we'll tell you which yours is before we start.
Measure & estimate
We measure your roof in person and hand you a written, itemized estimate, side by side with shingle if you're weighing both.
Pick the system & color
Standing seam or Tuff Rib, the gauge and the color, with real panel samples in your hand and a plain explanation of what each one trades off.
Panels made to fit
Tuff Rib panels are ordered cut to your roof's lengths; standing seam panels are roll-formed and cut on site. Either way, the job is scheduled around the panels, not rushed.
Tear-off & deck check
The old roof comes off, every sheet of decking is checked and anything soft is replaced, then high-temperature underlayment goes down.
Panels, trim & flashing
Panels set square, seams locked or screws sealed, and every edge, valley, wall and pipe trimmed and flashed. Snow guards go wherever sliding snow would land on people.
Cleanup & walkthrough
Magnets through the yard, every offcut hauled away, and a walkthrough with you, with photos of the details you'd need a ladder to see.

Replacing an old metal roof
Plenty of metal roofs on the Wasatch Front are older exposed-fastener panels, and they wear out in predictable ways: the rubber washers under the screws dry out and leak, rust starts where panels overlap, the paint chalks and fades, and a hailstorm leaves dents behind.
- Leaks at the screws: often fixed with new fasteners if the panels are sound
- Rust at the laps and edges: a sign the panels are near the end
- Hail dents: check how your policy treats cosmetic damage on metal
- Time to replace: new Tuff Rib, or a step up to standing seam

What metal costs you, honestly
The price: metal costs a good deal more than shingle up front. The math works if you're staying 15 years or more, or you want this to be your last roof; if you're selling within a decade, a GAF shingle roof with its 50-year warranty usually pencils out better. The hail caveat: big hail rarely breaks a metal roof, but it can dent one, and some policies exclude cosmetic damage on metal. Find that clause in your policy before you commit. Still weighing metal against shingle? Our guide to metal roof vs. shingles compares the two on lifespan, cost, snow, wind and hail.
Other options: after the look of cedar or slate? Compare composite shake and slate and real cedar shake. For a flat porch or addition, see flat and TPO roofing.
The noise myth: over solid decking and underlayment, a metal roof is no louder in a rainstorm than shingle. The drumming people remember needs open framing underneath, like a barn.

Davis County metal roofing FAQ
Is a metal roof loud when it rains?
Not on a house. The drumming people remember comes from metal over open framing, like a barn or a carport. Over solid decking and underlayment, which is how every roof we install goes on, rain on metal sounds about like rain on shingle from inside.
What does hail do to a metal roof?
It rarely punctures one, but big hail can dent it. The fine print is in your insurance policy: some policies exclude cosmetic hail damage on metal, so dents on a roof that still keeps water out may not be covered. Find that clause before you choose metal; we'll point you to it at the estimate.
How long does a metal roof last in Utah?
Decades longer than any shingle. The high-altitude sun that wears out asphalt barely touches steel, and for most homeowners who choose metal, it's the last roof they buy.
Can metal go over my existing shingles?
Code sometimes allows it, but we recommend tearing off. It's the only way to see and fix the decking, and a roof meant to last decades should start on a sound deck. We'll give you a straight answer for your house.
What's the difference between standing seam and Tuff Rib?
Standing seam hides its fasteners under interlocking seams: the longest life and the highest price. Tuff Rib is screwed through the face with sealing-washer screws: most of metal's benefits for less, with a screw checkup every few years. We install both.
Do I need snow guards?
Over doors, walks, driveways and decks, yes. Snow comes off a metal roof in sheets, and snow guards hold it in place so it melts off gradually instead of landing on someone. We lay them out with you at the estimate.
Do you replace old metal roofs?
Yes. Older exposed-fastener roofs start leaking at the screws as the washers age, and rust where the panels overlap. If the panels are sound, new screws may be all it needs; if they're rusted through or badly dented, we tear off and put on a new Tuff Rib or standing seam roof.
Will a metal roof make my house hotter in summer?
The opposite. Metal reflects the sun that dark asphalt absorbs, so the attic under a metal roof generally runs cooler in July, and the air conditioner notices.
