What a Vernal roof is up against
Vernal sits at about 5,360 feet in Ashley Valley, with the Uinta Mountains to the north and dry country on every other side. NOAA's 1991–2020 normals put it at about 9 inches of precipitation and 20 inches of snow a year, so a roof here isn't fighting volume. It's fighting range: January averages a high near 29 degrees and a low near 10, July highs average close to 89, and the sun at this elevation is strong all year.
Sun, cold and freeze-thaw
That range is what wears roofs out in the Basin. Ultraviolet light dries the asphalt in shingles until they curl, crack and shed granules, and south- and west-facing slopes go first. Winter days that climb above freezing and fall back below it push meltwater into anything open: a lifted shingle edge, a cracked pipe boot, an exposed nail, tired flashing. And because January snow can sit on a cold roof for days, a warm attic can still build ice dams at the eaves in a town that doesn't see much snow.
We're upfront about distance. Our office is in Farmington, about 188 road miles and three and a half hours away by I-80 and US-40, so we aren't the roofer down the street. What you get is the same Utah license, written scope and photo documentation we bring to every job, on dates we set together.
Metal roofs for Basin sun
The high-desert sun that dries out asphalt ages a painted steel roof far more slowly, and a metal roof reflects the July heat that dark shingles soak up, so the attic underneath runs cooler. When snow does come, it slides off instead of sitting on the roof. Standing seam hides its fasteners under the seams; Tuff Rib is the ribbed panel at a working price, and it suits shops, barns and garages. One caveat: big hail can dent metal, so check how your policy treats cosmetic damage before you choose it.
Roofing services for Vernal homes

Hail, when it comes
Hail falls less often in the Basin than on the Wasatch Front, so a damaged roof can go a season before anyone looks. After a storm we inspect, photograph every slope and document it for your claim.

Roofs for sun and cold
Ventilation that keeps the attic near the outside temperature, ice-and-water membrane at the eaves and valleys, and shingle or metal chosen to stand up to high-desert UV.

Freeze-thaw leaks
Lifted shingle edges, cracked pipe boots and loose flashing let water in, and every thaw-and-freeze cycle opens them a little wider. We fix the leak and what caused it.

Inspections by appointment
We book Vernal inspections ahead of time, get on the roof and into the attic if it's needed, and send you photos of every slope with a plain-language read.

Vernal roofing FAQ
Do I need a permit to replace a roof in Vernal?
Yes. Vernal City requires a permit for roof replacements. The city's Building Division handles them, and it says complete applications are typically reviewed within a week. Naples has its own building department, and homes in unincorporated areas such as Maeser and Jensen go through Uintah County Community Development. We pull the permit either way; your building department has the final word on code details such as snow load.
Do you serve Vernal from Farmington?
Yes. Our office is in Farmington, about 188 road miles and roughly three and a half hours away by I-80 and US-40. We don't have a Vernal office, so we set inspection and build dates with you ahead of time. Call or send the form with your address and we'll find a day.
Did the September 2026 hail hit Vernal?
Not according to the record. On September 18, 2026, the National Weather Service logged 1.75-inch hail about 16 miles southeast of Randlett, in open country well south of Vernal. There were no hail reports from Vernal itself. Hail is less frequent in the Basin than on the Wasatch Front, but it does happen here: in September 2013, FOX 13 reported a storm in Vernal that broke car windows and tore siding off homes. If you're unsure about your roof, a free inspection answers it.
Book a free inspection →What do Vernal's cold winters and strong sun do to a roof?
The sun dries asphalt shingles until they curl and lose granules, fastest on south and west slopes. Winter days that thaw and refreeze work water into any opening, and snow sitting on a roof over a warm attic builds ice dams at the eaves. Good attic ventilation and ice-and-water membrane at the eaves and valleys answer most of it, and we check both on every inspection.
